Should You Buy Gold Bars From a Bank or a Gold Shop in China?
For a Chinese-market buyer, the choice between a bank and a gold shop should be based on buy-back rules as much as the selling price. A bar that is cheap to buy but hard to resell through the original channel may not be the better investment.
What a bank example shows
The Agricultural Bank of China Chuan Shi Zhi Bao gold business says ABC’s proprietary physical gold has quality verification and repurchase certificates and can be bought back through designated outlets. It also requires the original purchase voucher, invoice, verification certificate, repurchase certificate, bank card, intact package and anti-fake label for repurchase. The page notes that local branches should be contacted for details.
The Agricultural Bank of China agency physical gold trading shows another ABC model: the bank sells and repurchases physical gold on behalf of gold enterprises, with listed product specifications and processing-fee examples. That means “bank counter” can still mean different product lines and fee rules.
Compare these conditions before buying
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is it the bank’s own brand or agency product? | Buy-back procedure and fee may differ. |
| Which outlets repurchase it? | “Designated outlet” is not necessarily every branch nationwide. |
| What documents are required? | Invoice, voucher, certificate and repurchase certificate may all be needed. |
| Must packaging and anti-fake labels be intact? | Opening or damaging packaging can trigger inspection, rejection or lower liquidity. |
| What is the spread? | Compare selling price, processing fee, buy-back price and any appraisal/handling cost. |
Bank or gold shop?
A bank may be better if you want standardized investment bars and a written repurchase process. A gold shop may be convenient for smaller weights, gifts or combining jewellery exchange with bullion buying, but you must ask whether it repurchases outside brands, opened packaging or bars without original receipts.
Before paying, ask the seller to write the weight, fineness, serial number, sell price formula, buy-back channel and required documents. If the salesperson cannot explain repurchase, treat the bar as a gift/collection purchase rather than a highly liquid investment.
